From Rita Moreno on the set of West Side Story, to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on the Congress floor, Latinas have been breaking ground in every discipline and field for generations. They’ve been front and center in the fight for civil rights, trailblazers in the arts and sciences, and architects of sweeping change in government. How has history reflected these accomplishments? Have they helped the public get beyond restricting and dismissive stereotypes about Latinas?
Join our panel of experts: Esperanza Sanchez, Associate Curator at LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes; Ruth Glasser, Associate Professor in Residence at UConn; and CT Deputy Majority Leader Rep. Hilda Santiago, Meriden’s 84th District, as they shed light on this proud history of strength and resilience.
Moderated by Prof. Ariel Mae Lambe, of the UConn Department of History.
This program is co-sponsored by UConn's El Instituto: Institute of Latina/o, Caribbean, and Latin American Studies, and the Connecticut Democracy Center at Connecticut’s Old State House.
