AARP – New Banking Law Aims to Curb Fraud

For a 73-year-old man from the Hartford area, the scam started with a Facebook message from an unfamiliar woman who seemed friendly and caring. They messaged back and forth so much that he started referring to her as his girlfriend.

Then she started asking him for money, for what she described as business opportunities. It began with small amounts before escalating to $20,000—supposedly to pay taxes on a $500,000 windfall. His bank noticed irregular activity on his account and warned it might be a scam, but he wired his “girlfriend” the money anyway, says Dorian Long, manager of the Protective Services for the Elderly program, part of the Connecticut Department of Social Services.

Long is now investigating the matter as a case of financial exploitation. But the chances of success aren’t good; once a wire transfer occurs, it can be tough to recover the funds.

A new state law, which goes into effect July 1, is designed to prevent such exploitation by authorizing banks and other financial institutions to put a temporary hold on suspicious activities if the victim is 60 or older. The law says financial institutions may report suspected abuse to the state’s Department of Banking or Department of Social Services for investigation. If warranted, the police are also contacted.

Early voting in CT brought out almost 18,000 out of 1.2 million

Out of the roughly 1.2 million registered Democrats and Republicans across Connecticut as of late March, about 17,800, or 1.4%, turned out last week to participate in the state’s first ever early voting period, according to unofficial data from the secretary of the state’s office.

Voters for the Democratic primary had a slightly higher turnout among early voters than Republicans, 1.56% and 1.12%, respectively.

“Pretty low turnout in general, but I thought it was a resounding success,” said Secretary of the State Stephanie Thomas in a press conference earlier today.

AARP Connecticut Urges PURA to Deny Eversource & United Illuminating Rate Increase Requests

AARP Connecticut encourages potentially impacted ratepayers to voice their position on the rate increase requests.

  • Tell PURA to Reject the UI Rate Increase Request: https://action.aarp.org/secure/ask-pura-reject-ui-rate-increase-request
  • Tell PURA to Reject the Eversource Rate Increase Request: https://action.aarp.org/secure/ask-pura-reject-eversource-rate-increase-request

AARP Connecticut submitted comments to the Connecticut Public Regulatory Authority (PURA) in opposition to requests for sizable electricity rate increases by Eversource Energy and United Illuminating Company.
“AARP calls on PURA to reject the latest rate increase proposals by Eversource and United Illuminating,” said John Erlingheuser, AARP Connecticut Senior Advocacy Director. “The excessive rate increase requests are an unnecessary and uneconomic expense on Connecticut ratepayers, especially older and low-income residents, who are struggling to pay their utility bills along with other household expenses like food and medicine. We urge PURA to fully examine Eversource and UI’s recent performances and consider the impact and unfair burden these increases would add for residents.”
