On May 14th twenty students participating in GBLN’s Civic Engagement for Youth Program visited the Legislative Office Building to meet with their state representatives and receive a tour of the building.
State Representatives Chris Rosario and Antonio Felipe met with the 7th & 8th graders from Cesar Batalla Elementary School, and Rosario’s aide provided a tour of the building.
The students had the opportunity to see and take a photo with Governor Ned Lamont and Congresswoman Johanna Hayes who was meeting with the Governor during our visit. In addition, the students were able to stop by and visit with Bridgeport organizations like BRBC that were also at the capitol celebrating Bridgeport Day.
The Civic Engagement Youth Program is a 12-week program that teaches students about community involvement by bringing in speakers that engage the students on topics of community service, understanding politics, learning about developments in the city, and the importance of being engaged in your neighborhood, city and state. The partnership between the school and the organization and is made possible this year through a grant provided by United Illuminating/Southern Conn. Gas.
The Greater Bridgeport Latino Network has provided this program for a decade to high school and middle school students.
