Latin rhythms of Arriba España! at the Klein

Arriba España! at the Klein Memorial Auditorium.

The Klein Memorial Auditorium's October concert shouts out "Arriba España!" on Saturday, Oct. 28.

The Greater Bridgeport Symphony is proud to present a program of Latin-American and Spanish music. And the Greater Bridgeport Latino Network is proud to offer 15 percent discounts on tickets for GBLN members. That means seats start at $12.75.

Here's what to expect on the Klein stage:

Roberto Sierra

The longest piece is a spirited contemporary Classical work from Puerto Rican composer Roberto Sierra's Tumbao from Sinfonia No. 3 - "La Salsa."

Sierra was born in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico in 1953 and today is a professor teaching composition at Cornell University.

His "La Salsa" was first commissioned by the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra.

“We’ve been wanting to perform music like this for a long time now,” says GBS Music Director Eric Jacobsen.  “This music is a part of the culture of our community, and we are very excited to bring it to The Klein!”

The piece joins the rhythms of revolution in Spain (Rodrigo, Casals and de Falla) and Argentina (Ginastera), with guest conductor Donald Palma.

The evening's program also features the Rodrigo Guitar Concerto -- Concierto Aranjuez, written at the end of the Spanish Civil War, with Classical guitar soloist Benjamin Verdery.

Palma, himself a noted bassist, is thrilled with the opportunities presented by the music.

“We’re looking forward to celebrating the incredible contributions by Hispanic composers with exhilarating music from Puerto Rico, Argentina and Spain, impeccably performed by the fine artists of the Greater Bridgeport Symphony,” he said.

“This concert will be a two-way introduction,” says GBS Executive Director Mark R. Halstead.  “For our audience, it’s an introduction to the symphonic music of Latin America and Spain.  For the Latino community in and around Bridgeport, we hope it will introduce orchestral music to a new audience, who we hope will come back again and again. GBS takes very seriously its role as artistic beacon in Bridgeport, for all the many cultures in our area.”

Tickets range from $15 to $59, with special discounts for GBLN members, students and families. With the Family Pack Deal, a family of five can come to the concert for only $55.50 (ticketing charges may apply). And for our members, mention GBLN for a 15 percent discount.

A special reception before concert is also offered. Start your evening with great Latin flavor provided by our friends at LA Tavern. Concert + reception $49 or $69; subscribers can attend the reception for just $20 per person. Make reservations through GBS at 203-576-0263 or opsgbs@gmail.com. Space is limited.

As we celebrate our Heritage while trying to bring comfort to Puerto Rico in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, we encourage you to attend this unique and magnificent program of Latin rhythms.
