Caregivers are the backbone of our country's health care system and families. They provide care to loved ones in need of support with activities of daily living and other needs specific to their emotional care during an illness, or for rehabilitation and other needs. Joan Monin, PhD., Assistant Professor Yale School of Public Health will explore the unique relationships that form between the parent and child with a focus on the quality of these relationships during times of caregiving and in later life. A focus on health, roles and the science and theories of the relationships, disability and overall health will be explored. Dr. Monin will share the extensive research done in this area and how it impacts our learning now and in the future.
PRESENTER: Professor Monin’s research examines how emotional processes affect health in older adult relationships. Her research combines survey methods and laboratory experiments to understand the mechanisms (e.g. emotional contagion, cardiovascular reactivity) and moderators (gender, individual differences in attachment) involved in these processes. Currently her research focuses on understanding how caregivers and care recipients support one another in the context of early stage dementia.
